Online Feed Reader

Monday, January 2nd 2006 | Ismael Ghalimi

An email client can be used to read feeds from weblogs and other websites, but I tend to prefer a dedicated client that has a simpler user interface and makes subsciptions a snap. Separating emails from feeds is also a good way to reduce one’s distraction level on a daily basis.

I have been using Google Reader lately and have only good things to say about this experimental service from Google Labs. The user interface will be familiar to Gmail users, but the Google Reader team developed some very neat controls for navigating posts and subscribing to new feeds that makes it a perfect blog reading tool. This one definitely made it to my Office 2.0 Setup, now served on the sidebar from del.icio.us.

I did not try Google reader personally since I am using something I am really fond of: Netvibes. This is a very cool ajaxy page that provides feed readers and a lot of other tools that I really like to use and a promising future. I really like the ability to add notes to the page as well as the bookmarks and flickr modules…

Worth a look if you did not already.

Google Reader seems a little strange. The navigation seemed just too wacky for me when I tried it out. It doesn’t act like any other reader I’ve used, and that doesn’t seem to be a good thing. Maybe I’ll give it a better try later on.

Rick,

Google Reader is indeed different from most readers. I like its navigation because it deletes a post once it has been read, allowing me to go through a lot of posts with minimal effort. Now, if you’d rather keep the posts for future reference, it might not be the best reader for you. May I ask which one you like best?

I use Bloglines… and I guess I didn’t even know it deleted posts that I’d read. Now that I’ve visited reader a couple times, it looks like it might be interesting. I’ll keep you posted…
