User Interface Philosophy
Friday, April 7th 2006 | Ismael Ghalimi
Office 2.0 applications that make use of some AJAX technology tend to sport very different styles of user interfaces. Some look like Google (Zoho Writer), others try to mimic applications developed for Microsoft Windows (ajaxWrite), yet some others developed radically new styles that look nothing like anything we have seen before (30 Boxes). In developing the Office 2.0 Database, I am trying to classify applications through specific UI philosophies. It’s a difficult exercise that leaves a lot of room to subjectivity. Currently, I have identified eight main trends: 30 Boxes, 37 Signals, Amazon, Flickr, Google, Mac OS, Windows, and Yahoo! If you have ideas on how to improve this classification, please drop me a line. And if you feel that the user interface you spent so much time working on is not properly represented by the bucket it was put into, feel free to complain loud and clear, and I’ll make sure to give it due credit! Last but not least, the best place to learn about Web 2.0 user interface design might be Emily Chang’s excellent blog. Her recent post on Design 2.0 is a must read.
