Office 2.0 Expense Trackers

Sunday, May 7th 2006 | Ismael Ghalimi

The Office 2.0 Database now includes three pretty good online expense trackers, 1time, foonance and Mvelopes, but none of them are a match for Intuit Quicken, mainly because they do not provide any real-time integration with online banking systems that most retail banks offer as a service today.

Most of what an expense tracker does is matching a given expense to a particular account, budget line, or project. Most of this information already exists though, and can be served in real-time by online banking systems that financial planning applications such as Quicken tap into. Unfortunately, none of the Office 2.0 expense trackers that are currently available provide such a level of integration, requiring users to manually enter data about transactions, such as amount, date, object, recipient, etc. This is a pure waste of time, which as a result dramatically reduces the value of such services.

A true Office 2.0 alternative to Intuit Quicken is needed. Intuit would be the best company to develop it, but has been reluctant to support any other web browser than Microsoft Internet Explorer for Quickbooks Online Edition, therefore my hopes are set pretty low. For this reason, I have added a new entry into the Office 2.0 Bug Tracker.

I wonder if Quicken will change their tune when they look at the latest stats for Firefox uptake? Having said that, integration to banking systems isn’t that easy. But — if and when PayPal becomes more widely used as a payment mechanism for ad hoc procurement and expense handling, then I’d expect to see some form of mashup.

Thanks for link, but I think you have 1time in the wrong category. 1time is an online time sheet or time tracking application for project based service companies like designers, consultants, accountants, lawyers, software developers, etc. You can also track expenses on specific projects as well as time. Just thought I’d give you the heads up.

[…] IT|Redux ยป Office 2.0 Expense Trackers I’m looking for a better way to track my expenses. Ismael thinks Quicken’s the only real solution, because of its online integration with banks. I dislike Quicken on the Mac, it’s far inferior to the Windows version. (tags: expense-tracking finances money quicken) […]
