Combining Devices

Saturday, July 8th 2006 | Ismael Ghalimi

When I travel, I currently carry a laptop, a cellphone, an iPod, and a digital camera. That’s four devices, therefore four power adapters. I’ve tried the iGo universal adapter, but it’s so heavy and cumbersome that it did not work for me. With 3.2 megapixel camera phones coming out and 2GB miniSD cards being available, I am seriously considering replacing my cellphone, iPod and camera by a single device. Here are a couple of options.

The Nokia N93 would be my first choice right now. It’s a quad-band GSM/UMTS phone, it features a 3x optical zoom, can connect to 802.11b/g Wi-Fi networks, and is capable of playing both MP3 and AAC music files.

Another option would be the Sony Ericsson K790a. It has very similar features, but packaged in a much smaller form factor, while using Memory Stick Micro media instead of miniSD. At this point, I’m really not sure which way to go.

Of course, going down this path means losing the full keyboard offered by a BlackBerry device or my current Cingular 8125 smartphone, but since I got my Sony VAIO VGN-TX790P equipped with EDGE Internet access, I find myself typing emails on my smartphone much less often.

I think I’m going to try this option out.

[…] Of course, this goes against the goal to combine multiple devices into one, as illustrated in this previous article. Nevertheless, I do not believe that one single device will provide everything one needs, especially if you want the device to be both a phone, a media player, an organizer and a camera. Instead, I believe in the effectiveness of smart combinations. […]
