Office 2.0 on Google
Friday, July 21st 2006 | Ismael Ghalimi
As of today, typing "Office 2.0" on Google, with or without double quotation marks, returns IT|Redux as very first result, ahead of OpenOffice.org, which had held the first place until now because of its 2.0 release.
The Office 2.0 meme was introduced on January 1st, 2006, when I published some inferences for the new year. Since then, the concept has been refined, and more and more users are trying to replicate my original experiment, like Craig Cmehil from SAP for example.
Even though most of the written press still prefers the "Web Office" terminology, I believe that the meme holds a good chance of establishing itself in the marketplace. And because it benefits from a clear definition that is being refined over time, I expect Office 2.0 to be less controversial than its Web 2.0 cousin.
But when IT|Redux will show up on Google when typing "office" is up for bets.

Ismael,
Just hope you don’t have a trademark on Office 2.0 — just kidding.

Ismael,
Found this Office 2.0 set on Flickr. Not quite what we had in mind, but fairly interesting nonetheless. Simplicity, leanness, ease of use — it seems to be all there.

Ryan,
Indeed… My setup looks awefully similar, down to Tufte’s excellent books.
Ismael,
It’s funny, I actually think Web Office is more descriptive, and that’s what I’ve been using last year. I don’t even know when I “gave in” and started to use Office 2.0 — you must have brainwashed me…
Sridhar,
Don’t worry about the trademark, you’re already working on Office 3.0, aren’t you? And even if not, I have a solution.
