Improved Office 2.0 Database
Sunday, July 30th 2006 | Ismael Ghalimi
The Office 2.0 Database has been bookmarked by 1,835 people on del.icio.us, so I figured that it must be quite useful. Several users suggested that I make some improvements to the old database in order to make it more readable, such as repeating the header for example. I found some time to work on it this week-end, and I am quite happy with the results.
The database remains powered by the excellent Dabble DB, but I am not using the standard HTML view anymore. Instead, I have built a custom view, which repeats the header line for each family of application, displays the application’s name on both top left and top right columns, and supports row highlighting when hovering with the mouse — I’m not sure if it works with Internet Explorer though.
I have also added a dedicated page for each application, which over time will provide more information, such as logo and screenshots for example. Here is the one my beloved Salesforce.com.
Finally, I could not resist the temptation of using a Firefox plugin for producing a very large screenshot. Jeff Barr, found through Paul Walk’s blog, suggested the use of GraphicsEx, which I installed and used to produce the screenshot displayed below. The original image was 2,042 pixels wide by 9,895 pixels tall, so I had to resize it in order to make it fit within these lines. It’s absolutely useless, but I really like the look of it.
If your preferred Office 2.0 application does not appear on the list, or if the information provided is incomplete, please use this form powered by Wufoo in order to add your contribution to this collective effort. 52 people have contributed so far, and I am forever grateful to Lee Provoost for his many additions and corrections.

Ismael,
This page doesn’t seem to display anything on Firefox at least.
Am I too early?
Lucho,
It requires JavaScript. Make sure you have it turned on.
I will work on a static HTML version though.
Stay tuned!
Sorry, I have JavaScript disabled by default. It’s working.
Ismael:
I know you’re very busy, but I was wondering if you would have any time in the near or not so distant future to check the following project management applications out: Groove and eProject. The latter claims to be AJAX based and a Web 2.0 application. They are both very good tools, and eProject has a lot of project management knowledge built into it.
Would they be worthy of the database?
Thanks,
-Ryan
Ryan,
I’m not sure. The database currently focuses on applications that can run in the web browser and are available from an online service provider, without having to install any software on the server side. As far as I can tell, Groove requires the use of Windows, and eProject is not available as a service. If this is correct, they would not be good matches, even though they look like very powerful project management applications.
[…] Ismael has been hard at work and recently released an updated Office 2.0 Database. The new website also supplies an application submission form and uses Dabble DB’s JSON data feed to parse and display all the entries in the database (neat!). Take a look! […]
