Your Office 2.0 Setup
Tuesday, February 13th 2007 | Ismael Ghalimi
Our Weekly Office 2.0 Roundup is generating a fair amount of interest, and some readers have suggested that we put together a summary page featuring the winners and challengers in each category. That’s pretty easy, and should be a lot less biased than My Office 2.0 Setup, so here comes Your Office 2.0 Setup. This is a work in progress, which we expect to complete by the end of the year. In the meantime, make sure to cast your vote every week, so that we make this totally unscientific survey as meaningful as it can be.

Ismael,
At the risk of introducing scope creep—but at least it’s early before too much data has been gathered—can I suggest the following questions and approaches?
1. Which type of application do you use (Bookmark, CRM, Word Processor, etc.)?
a. Daily
b. Two or Three times a week
c. Weekly
d. Rarely
e. Never
2. How do you or would you like to use Office 2.0 tools?
a. Purely on line
b. Mixed on/offline with online storage
c. On/offline with local storage
3. How important is it that data is stored in an open, standard format?
I feel that this would help guide application developers, and also help normalize the scoring. For example, does the fact that there were 60 respondents to bookmarking and 8 for contacts implies that bookmarking is more developed/popular/widely known than contacts, or is it just that bookmarkers are more opinionated in their choice of tools than laid back contact managers?
It would be an interesting exercise to manage the questionnaire via Dabble DB or Zoho—not sure how you’d ensure one person one vote, but this can be an exercise for the reader.
No doubt others would propose extra questions—perhaps we need a meta-poll (what question would you like to ask), plus some taxonomy to group suggestions down for a simpler voting mechanism.
Now I’ll stop acting as a customer (always wanting more), and get back into my developer box.
Andy,
Lots of interesting ideas there. I will put together some of these surveys once we get a quarter or two of weekly roundups done. That way, we should get enough votes to make it statistically relevant. For information, Zoho Polls uses IP addresses to ensure that only one vote is recorded per user. There must be ways to trick the system, but I’m not too worried about it right now. It’s not like we’re conducting the election for the next U.S. president…
Take care
-Ismael

I wonder if anyone can help me? I’m looking for a webtop solution for a small business. They need an online scheduling & CRM solution with QuickBooks integration. The scheduler would have to have a client access point as well, easily interface with her web site, and on the administrative end be able to handle some rules.
[…] For those of us dealing with Information Technology daily, the web is an indispensable source of information. However, apart from Gmail, many people may be unaware the availability of many Web 2.0 applications - some free, others using a subscription model - which basically will allow us to work from anywhere as long as we have access to a web browser. Well, here is a good list of Office 2.0 setup. […]
