Name Tags and Signage

Our quest for a paperless conference is coming to an end. The weekend was quite productive, and we found solutions for badges and signage, for both demo pods and meeting rooms. We are now ready to order 60 iMac computers and 60 flat panel displays. We will keep the displays for future events, but the iMacs will go on sale immediately after the conference. If you want to get one (or more) for 15% off retail, please feel free drop us a line. [Continue…]

The Quest for a Paperless Conference

One of our goals for this year’s Office 2.0 Conference is to go completely paperless. From a back-office standpoint, we’re pretty much done, and our setup is doing wonders. So the real challenge is to get rid of any printed materials during the conference itself. Our two biggest problems are sponsor logos on demo pods, and name tags worn by attendees. Here is how we are trying to solve them. [Continue…]

The Need for Speed

For me, producing the Office 2.0 Conference is nothing more than a hobby, and the reason why we organize everything in the last two months that precede the event is just so that we do not get distracted by it during the rest of the year. This also contributes to create a sense of urgency, which from the outside looks like momentum, and momentum is a critical success factor for any conference business, or any business for that matter. In other words, we’ve got a perfect example of self-fulfilling prophecy at play. Unfortunately, this also creates a situation where a lot of things have to be done in a record time, and the need for speed is never felt so acutely than during these two Summer months. Here come EchoSign and the iPhone, two perfect examples of Office 2.0 productivity tools that will help you get things done, faster than you ever thought was possible. [Continue…]

OpenSAM is Promising

The Office 2.0 Bug Tracker created more than a year ago is not evolving much these days, and there is a very simple reason for that: most of the bugs that have been identified early on, such as the lack of a proper infrastructure for single sign-on across applications, or the inability to copy-and-paste data from one to another, have yet to be fixed. Nevertheless, some dedicated folks are working hard to fix them, and among them my friends Eric Hoffert and Tom Snyder, founders of ShareMethods and iNetOffice respectively. Together with other Office 2.0 companies, they have created the OpenSAM consortium, which aims at developing the standards that will fix these bugs once and for all. What follows is an article contributed by Eric. [Continue…]

iPhone Experiment

When Steve Jobs first unveiled the iPhone back in February, I was immediately convinced that this device would turn into a great tool for Office 2.0. This belief got reinforced when Apple decided to use the built-in web browser as main development platform, thereby adopting a pure Office 2.0 approach for all application developments. My first impressions after using the device for a couple of days exceeded my original expectations, and when time came to select a device that could be given to every attendee of the Office 2.0 Conference, our first choice naturally went for Apple’s latest creation. There were a couple of problems though: First, could we buy that many devices, knowing that we are expecting anywhere between 500 and 750 participants this year? Second, could we get the devices activated before people show up for the conference? Today, I am pleased to report that both problems have been solved, and that every participant to the Office 2.0 Conference will receive a shiny new iPhone. Here is what we will do with them. [Continue…]

Office 2.0 Conference Website Now Live

The website for the upcoming Office 2.0 Conference is now live at the o2con.com url, short enough to be typed from a mobile device. We opened attendee registration, press registration, and hotel reservation. We also issued a first call for speakers and started a conference blog. [Continue…]

At IT|Redux, we like to eat our own dog food, and when time comes to work on the next edition of the Office 2.0 Conference, we put together a complete setup made of various online applications that we use to do pretty much everything. Here is a sample of what we have been using so far. [Continue…]

Lab Work

The first Office 2.0 Conference was very much an accident with a happy ending. It was put together in less than two months, yet turned out to be pretty successful. Because we had so little time to organize it, we had to innovate on many fronts, and improvise for pretty much everything. This largely contributed to create an interesting buzz, and lots of creative energy. So when time came to start thinking about its second edition earlier this year, we pretty much decided to wait until the last minute before doing anything beside setting a date and booking a place for it. We’re less than two months away from the actual event (September 5-7, 2007, register here), and time has come to get some work done. Here is where we are. [Continue…]

iPhone First Impressions

When the iPhone was announced back in January, we knew that something really special was about to be released. Sky high expectations were set, promptly followed by a frenetic launch that established a new standard for any other consumer electronics product to match. Even though some users experienced difficulties during the activation process, while others complained about the sluggishness of the AT&T network, the actual product seems to meet everybody’s expectations, high or low. Mine were definitely on the high end of the spectrum, and after three days of experimentations, here is what I came away with. [Continue…]
