Ismael, how is your "HTPC" project coming along? What software are you using? MCE? Something else? I assume AvyDVD for ripping?

Have you played with Plex on the Mac?

Colton,

The MacBook Air is the best laptop I found for meetings, but battery life is not good enough to be used for traveling. As a result, I also use a Sony VAIO VGN-TZ298N/XC.

Best regards

Ismael,

Very interesting post. I enjoyed reading it. What do you think about the MacBook Air? I am an Egnyte user and think it's great.

Cheers,

Ismael:

Followed your advice and got a SONY VAIO SZ770, and could not be any happier. It's a bit larger than the TZ, but it has a little bit more power, a great screen, nice keyboard, and great finish in carbon fiber. And it is much more portable than my Dell Latitude 830.

Thanks again,
-Ryan

For travels, I reverted to a Sony VAIO VGN-TZ298N/XC.

Ismael:

I am just curious about how you are using your MacBook Air. Is it your main laptop for travel? What can you do with it besides typical tasks? Is the Franklin modem compatible with major carriers?

And Bob, if you read this, I am just curious how you use Tiddly Wiki. I find it fascinating, but have not been able to think about mainstream uses for it. I would welcome your advice based on your experience.

Thanks,
-Ryan

Just thought of what you are doing -- PPM, or Personal Process Management!

That should look awesome in your living room.

I am working on something a little less complex but good enough for my needs. I am installing linuxmce on a custom built media box in my living room, and plugging it straight into my big screen. I'm attaching it to a NAS and installing open source tools to rip Blu-ray movies to my storage array, and store and access my other media. Add BitTorrent to that and Pligg, and I will be sharing movies with my close friends before you know it.

Good luck with your experiment.

David,

The reasons for it is pretty simple: online data storage services have pricing models based on capacity and bandwidth usage. Some are more cost effective at storing large amount of data that you rarely get access to, others at storing smaller amounts of data that gets downloaded and uploaded a lot. As a result, you might want to use different services for data sharing, backup, and archiving.

Best regards
-Ismael

Keep on eye on what we're doing with Diamelle regarding IAM.

Gyaresu,

The whole system could be built with Linux as well. Intalio|BPMS is certified on RHEL, and all the hardware components I selected for UltraVista come with Linux drivers. The only reason why I picked Vista is that it will be a little bit easier for me to administrate (my sysadmin skills are virtually nonexistent).

Best regards

You are biting off a lot here Ismael, this should be fun...

I'm afraid you lost me by mentioning both Amazon S3 AND Egnyte. Why are you going to be using these two different services? If for online backup, why not just one?

Hi Ismael,

What a lot of grunt you are building! I bet it will still be dated in a couple of years time though! I think you're heading in the right direction with your thinking here. You need to provide process and workflow in this way; I see it as the future. We must discuss my idea of multiple personalities, each one dependent on what or where a system (or application) is deployed. One for my laptop, one for my Redux Model 1, and so on. They will all be able to talk to each other, so if I add a contact to one personality, they all know about it in their own context. That will take some smart processes too.

In my small way, I'm using TiddlyWiki to act as a knowledge repository that allows me to pull different resources into one location for easy access. I see you doing the same sort of think, only on a grander scale. With so many excellent applications around on the Internet, you do need a smart way of managing the use of the ones that you choose to go with and changing to new ones that provide features that better match your needs.

Cheers
-Bob

This is going to be very interesting to follow. Only thing better would have been to install Linux instead of Vista but the exercise will be fascinating.
