Salesforce.com on iPhone

Sunday, March 30th 2008 | Ismael Ghalimi

Salesforce.com recently demonstrated the iPhone application it will release on iTunes sometime in June. It looks great, but I really could not wait for it. Furthermore, I expect it to support only a subset of the objects I need, and certainly not the custom ones I have created to get things done. Therefore, my friend Ihab and I have been working on a proof of concept application built using an S-Control and running on the iPhone’s Safari web browser (no hacks required).

At present time, the application only displays today’s Activities (Events and Tasks), and some limitations with Salesforce.com’s API do not allow us to properly display comments. Nevertheless it works, and it’s very easy to install. If you want to try it out, follow these simple steps:

  • Go to Setup -> Develop -> S-Controls
  • Click on “New Custom S-Control”
  • Give your new S-Control a Label (I called it “iExtreme”)
  • Paste the content of this file into the “Content” text area
  • Click on the “Save” button
  • Click on your new S-Control’s label from the list of S-Controls
  • Copy the S-Control’s ID from the page’s URL (mine is 01N500000004vel)
  • Replace the S-Control’s ID with yours in this URL
  • Replace the instance name in the URL with yours (mine is “na3″)
  • Go to the new URL from your iPhone using Safari
  • Enjoy!

This application was developed using Joe Hewitt’s iUI project. At present time, the “Name” (Who), Related To (What), and Comments (Description) fields cannot be displayed. If you know how to fix this bug, please let us know. Also, a strange bug related to time zones requires that we use YESTERDAY’s date instead of TODAY’s date to display today’s events and tasks. It works, but it’s ugly. Any help on this front would be much appreciated as well.

This work is part of the projects developed alongside the Extreme Productivity Seminar we’re organizing. If you’re trying to use Salesforce.com as a personal and/or group productivity tool, make sure to review our slide deck, and consider attending one of our seminars. They’re packed with tips and tools like this one.
