Miscellaneous Updates

Between Intalio, which staff doubled in size over the past six months, extensive traveling around the world (over 50,000 qualifying miles flown so far this year), the occasional extreme productivity seminar, my training for the commercial pilot license, and the time spent with my family (Cf. Father Pride), I found it difficult to maintain a regular blogging schedule lately. I’m hopeful that I’ll find the right pace eventually, but in the meantime, here are some noteworthy updates on various fronts.
First, Intalio’s first user conferenc, to take place at the W Hotel in San Francisco, CA, on June 17-18. If you’re already using Intalio|BPMS, want to learn more about our upcoming Business Process Platform (BPP), or are just kicking the tires with a new BPM project, this event is for you. You’ll meet with the team that built seven of the fifty six top-level projects at the Apache Software Foundation, the companies and governments that deployed some of the most advanced Business Process Management Systems in the world today, and the most knowledgeable analysts in the industry, including Janelle Hill from Gartner. If this sounds like fun, make sure to register before we sell out.
Second, the upcoming Office 2.0 Conference. Following Salesforce.com’s partnership with Google, the concept is generating more and more headlines, and the conference is on the radar of many more people than last year. It’s definitely a good thing, but it will require that we grow our team a bit if we want to deliver on the expectations we created following the last event. As a result, we hired a couple of collaborators, and are currently looking for office space in Palo Alto downtown. If you have room available for one or two people, for six months or more, please drop me a note. Also, our registration system should go online very soon.
Third, the second Extreme Productivity Seminar. The first one was quite a success, and we gathered a whole bunch of feedback to make the next one even better. Also, we’ve done a lot of work to take advantage of the Salesforce.com | Google mashup, and integrated most of our findings into the program. The event will take place at the posh Four Seasons Palo Alto, on May 29. Seating is limited to 12 participants, so make sure to register today if you’re interested. A third event is being planned to take place in early July in Austin, TX. Please write a comment to this blog if you want to learn more about it. Many thanks to Mike for helping with this one!
Fourth, I’m off to Ojai, CA later this week to meet with David Allen of GTD fame. Two people from The David Allen Company attended the last Office 2.0 Conference, liked it, and suggested that I meet with David for an interview. Obviously, I did not need much to be convinced, and was more than happy to find a justification for yet another flying mission. So I’m taking a day off from work on Wednesday, and will fly from Palo Alto to Camarillo on my trusted N246BJ, a Cirrus SR22 GTS rented from Advantage Aviation. This is the plane I fly for week-end escapades to Las Vegas, NV with friends. If you’d like to join us for one of these, give me a buzz.
Fifth, the Office 2.0 Database is up for a major overhaul. Following the advice of my friend Susan Scrupski, we will turn it into a central resource for everything Office 2.0, with a focus on user-generated content. It will be migrated to the office20.com domain name that was generously donated by Mark Bean (thank you Mark!), and will be powered by a best of breed collection of Office 2.0 tools. If you have specific ideas for how to make it better, please voice your opinion by commenting on this post.
Sixth, I’d like to share a recent discovery with you. Usually, I tend to use this blog for professional topics only, and use the ghalimi.name blog for matters that are more personal. Nevertheless, sometimes I’ll find something so outstanding that it deserves to be shared with an audience as large as possible – the itredux.com readership is 100 times the size of ghalimi.name’s. So without further ado, please meet Monocle, the best magazine I have ever read, ever. Edited by Tyler Brûlé (founder of Wallpaper*), Monocle is a monthly celebration of what makes Planet Earth an interesting place to live in, and our modern lives as traveling cosmopolitan citizen engaging, exciting, and rewarding. It ain’t cheap, but the best things in life usually aren’t, or they’re free, and paper doesn’t grow on trees. Well, actually it sort of does, but you got my point…
Seventh, I’ve decided to fully offset my carbon footprint by the end of the year. As part of this project, I’m trying to figure out the CO2 output of this blog, which was recently upgraded to WordPress 2.5 and migrated from Yahoo! to 1&1 thanks to my friend Pascal’s help. If you know a way to evaluate such an output based on the limited data one can get from a large web hosting company, I’m all ears.

I like the idea of incorporating more user-generated content into the Office 2.0 database. At risk of sounding like a populist it might be nice if people could mark tools as “I use this!” or something of the sort and build up a personal profile of the tools they use. So you might gain insight into popular tools, but I think more importantly you would be able to find a tool you like and navigate via profiles to discover other tools used by people who like the tools you like. Not quite a recommendation engine, just a social graphing tool.
