I Love Technology

Tuesday, June 24th 2008 | Ismael Ghalimi

Nine years ago, on this very day, I was in Tokyo, speaking at what might have been the first local conference on Open Source. Back then, the only way to connect to the Internet on the go was by using a 28 Kbps modem, assuming you could afford the cost of a long-distance call to your home-based ISP, or would know the local dial-up number for AOL or CompuServe. Nine years later, at this very moment, I am writing this blog post sitting in a JR train on the Yamanote Line, connected to the Internet using a brand spanking new EMOBILE 3G modem bought in Akihabara, built by Huawei, and delivering a mind-blowing 7.2 Mbps. 257 times faster, sans wires. I love technology… Many thanks to Nicolas for his help in setting this up.

Hi Ismael,

Good to hear you still have a need for speed! I have a similar setup (Vodafone Broadband; perhaps the same device by Huawei), vital when on a site where you have no connectivity provided. I even find it difficult to use all my monthly quota!

The down side is if you’re in an area that does not support the 7.2 Mbps, and you are reduced to 57 Kbps! The bandwidth demands of current web applications make 9 year old data rates almost unusable.

The up side? The cost has recently halved here in the UK.

Cheers

Bob,

Good to hear from you.

I’m spending so much time in Europe that I’m considering getting a local provider as well. Roaming is very expensive. We’re reaching a point where I might have a provider in three or four locations around the globe in around to reduce costs. Kinda silly, but I don’t see any way around it at this point…
