SAAS protagonists insist that multi-tenancy is the be all and end all, but the reality of constraints at the Enterprise level interferes with that. I agree with your first point wholeheatedly — We come from a background in Enterprise Risk Management (mostly in Financial Services, although I'm not sure that backs up my point very well at this moment!), and we are finding that large organizations are very interested in making sure privacy and SAS 70 concerns are properly understood for any "cloud-sourced" vendor. This is currently a major concern (and blocker) for any CIO evaluating moving processes and data off premise.

Great post! Many people are walking around talking Multi Tenancy without fully understanding the real meaning of the concept. I actually found the point of "Always run a single version of your software, across all instances" as being the most important one. People tend to over calculate the cost of servers and number of instances they can run on each server, but forget that avoiding the R&D related cost of running many versions and maintaining them is the true cost saving of the SaaS model. Enterprise software players often spend 70% and more on old versions/old code, and every dollar you spend on the past is one you don't spend on future growth.
