A thoughtful blog essay, Ismael. I read a small book a few years ago, (and re-read it again during difficult times) called the Consolations of Philosophy by Alain de Botton, and I have to say the chapter on Seneca and the Stoics was one of the most enlightening. Thanks for taking the time to write about your experience. I'll check out your other blog for more on this particular thread.

Just happened to come by this blog, and thank you for sharing. It's certainly an interesting way to live life. But Zen may not be as esoteric as you think. If words can describe it, it is simply being honest and sincere in each moment, seeing things as they are (both the good and the bad), and neither about focusing on mostly the negativity or mostly the positivity, or the conceptualization of any particular things.

May I suggest you to consider this book:

Nothing Special: Living Zen, By Charlotte J. Beck.

Best regards,
-Kin

Thanks for posting this. I've often felt that business leaders should be transparent about their philosophies in blogging -- after all, readers are self-selected. And it is often the "invisible" elements of a personality which are at the core of its power.

Your reference to genuine Christian forgiveness (man, is that tough to live) came after I was thinking of Paul's advice to be content with food and clothing only and Jesus' constant admonition to sell what one has and give to the poor. From my perspective, yesterday (Easter) was a reminder that "He is Risen" and your post is a personal challenge to let my lifestyle become increasingly more inline with the example of the Christ of Christian forgiveness.

All prayers appreciated from anyone comfortable with offering them.

Thanks Ismael for your well-written post. I was affected in a similar manner by The Stoic Art of Living by Tom Morris. Really marvelous perspective. Look forward to meeting you at the GTD Summit.

All best,

Ismael,

Let me recommend you Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full" novel (1998).

A big part of it is about how Stoics changed the life of two modern Americans. One of them has read Irvine's book in a jail if I remember it correctly, the other is a real estate multi-millionaire.
